You’ve built an awesome on Instagram. You show up in Stories, share your offers, and maybe you’ve even had people say “Ooh I love your social media!”

But here’s the thing: you don’t actually own that space. One algorithm update, a shadowban, or a hacked account, and suddenly the audience you’ve spent years building could disappear overnight.

That’s why your email list matters. It’s yours. It’s stable. It doesn’t depend on a trending sound or Meta’s mood.

And if you’re going to put in all that effort building an audience on Instagram, it just makes sense to encourage those people to join your email list through your own website, not someone else’s.

Let’s look at how you can make that happen.

Why Your Website Should Be the Home of Your Mailing List

Lots of people use free landing pages from platforms like MailerLite or ConvertKit. And while they do the job, they’re not doing your business any favours long-term.

Here’s why using your website is better:

  • You keep people in your world where they can explore your offers, listen to your podcast, read your blog or buy your product
  • You build trust and familiarity with your own branding (not some basic white and green landing page)
  • You can track visits, retarget warm leads, and create a proper journey through your content
  • You get people one step closer to your business as a whole, not just your inbox

So if you’re serious about growing your business, get serious about using your website to grow your list.

But First, Give People a Reason to Join

Spoiler alert: “Sign up to my newsletter” isn’t going to cut it.

People are protective of their inbox. If they’re going to hand over their email, it needs to feel worth it.

Here’s what works:

  • Free downloads (checklists, swipe files, guides, templates)
  • Exclusive offers (discounts, early access, freebies with purchase)
  • Time-saving tips (how to plan content in 10 mins a week, for example)
  • Private invites (to challenges, pop-up events, or secret sales)

Pick something that solves a small but real problem for your ideal client and makes them think: “That would really help me right now.”

Practical Ways to Drive Instagram Traffic to Your Mailing List

Alright, now let’s get strategic. Here’s how to gently (and effectively) guide your Instagram followers onto your email list without sounding like a pushy sales bot.

1. Make It Visible in Your Bio

Keep it simple.
Add a short, punchy line like:

✨ Get my free [insert offer] click below ⬇️

Then make sure the first link in your bio goes to your sign-up page (hosted on your website, of course)
You can use a “link in bio” tool if you like but even better? Create your own mini hub on your site (like yourdomain.com/links)

2. Talk About It in Stories Like a Friend on Facetime

Instead of saying “subscribe to my newsletter,” try:

  • “I made this free guide because I was so fed up wasting time planning content”
  • “Want a peek behind the curtain of how I actually plan my content each week? It’s all in my free download, grab it in the link”
  • “This helped me go from posting randomly to making actual sales, link in bio if you fancy it”

Use the Link Sticker and add a quick selfie or boomerang to keep it casual.

Repetition is your friend here, not everyone sees every Story. Keep sharing it, just in slightly different ways.

3. Create a Highlight Just for Your Freebie

Save your best Stories where you talk about your offer in a Highlight. Name it something clear like:

  • “Free Guide”
  • “Plan Content Faster”
  • “Get xx Discount”

Make it feel like a low-effort, high-reward decision to click through and grab it.

4. Use Posts to Build Trust THEN Mention the Freebie

Don’t make every post a pitch. Instead:

  1. Start with something relatable “If you’ve ever spent 2 hours making a Reel that got 23 views… this is for you.”
  2. Share 2–3 quick tips or a story about what helped you.
  3. Then drop the freebie: “If you want to steal the system I use, grab my free weekly content planner, link in bio or comment (one word) and I’ll sent the link straight over”

This warms people up before they’re asked to take action.

5. Share Behind-the-Scenes of Your Freebie

People love seeing real stuff in action.

So:

  • If it’s a checklist, print it out and show how you use it
  • If it’s a discount code, walk through what they could buy with it
  • If it’s a guide, flick through it on video

Make it feel tangible and useful. People are more likely to download something they’ve seen in action.

Create a Natural Journey From Scroll to Subscribe

The goal isn’t to force people off Instagram. It’s to invite them into a deeper part of your business.

So think about their journey:

  • They find you through a Reel
  • They watch a few Stories
  • They head to your link in bio
  • They download something helpful
  • They land on your website (which now feels like your space)
  • And boom, they’re on your list

From there? You build trust with email, you show them what you offer, and when they’re ready, they buy.

Your email list isn’t just a safety net in case Instagram disappears (I’m looking at you, TikTok)

It’s the place where real connection, trust, and sales happen.

And when you bring people from Instagram to your website, you’re inviting them into the heart of your business, not just another inbox.

You don’t need fancy funnels or tech wizardry, just a helpful freebie, a clean page on your site, and a little confidence to show up and share it regularly.

Make it part of your weekly rhythm. Talk about your email list the same way you’d chat to a mate about a new Netflix show. “You’ll love this, it made my life easier.”

Because the truth is: people want to learn from you. They want what you’ve created. You just need to make it easy for them to say yes.
