Is Your Website Down? Here’s Your 5-Minute First Response Kit
You type in your URL, hit enter and… nothing. Perhaps it is a blank white screen, a spinning wheel of doom or an error code”

First of all: Don’t panic.
It is easy to spiral into thinking your business has disappeared from the internet forever, but the reality is usually much less dramatic. Most website outages are temporary, and many are caused by simple issues you can fix yourself in a few minutes.
Follow this simple, jargon-free guide to figure out what is going on.
Step 1: The “is it just me?” check
The most common reason a website appears offline is actually a local connection issue. Before you assume the worst, let’s make sure your computer or phone.
Try “incognito” mode
Web browsers (like Chrome or Safari) store data to help websites load faster. Sometimes, this old data gets stuck and shows you an error page even if the site is working fine for everyone else.
Open a “Private” or “Incognito” window in your browser and try to visit your website. If the site loads as it should in Incognito mode, your website is fine! You just need to clear your browser history and cache.
If you don’t know how to do this, simply search ‘Private Browsing on [insert browser name example: Chrome] browser’.
Test your connection

Sometimes your home Wi-Fi has a momentary blip, or a firewall setting is blocking the site, so turn off Wi-Fi on your mobile and try to load the website using your mobile data. If it loads on your mobile but not your computer, the issue is with your local internet connection, not the website itself.
Use an online checker
If you want to be 100% certain, ask an impartial judge. Websites like Down For Everyone Or Just Me are brilliant for this. You simply type in your website address and it will tell you if the site is down for the whole world, or just for you.
Step 2: Check the Boring Admin
It happens to the absolute best of us. a card expires, a reminder email goes into the spam folder, even your ‘i’ll do this later’ pile and suddenly the lights go out.
Check your domain
Log into the site where you bought your website name (like GoDaddy or IONOS). Has your your registration expired? If a domain isn’t renewed, the website vanishes immediately.
Check your hosting bill
Have a quick look at your hosting account, bank statement or your emails. Did an auto-renewal payment fail recently? Hosting companies are quick to suspend accounts if a bill is overdue.
The Fix is usually as simple as updating your card details and once you’ve paid the invoice, you’ll be back online.
Step 3: The “did I touch it?” test
Let’s be honest, this is a safe space …were you tinkering with the website just before it crashed?
If you use a system like WordPress, it is very common for a site to break after you update a plugin or change a theme setting. Sometimes two plugins just don’t play nicely together. If you can still log into your dashboard, try switching off the last plugin you installed or updated.
If that brings the site back, you have found the culprit.
If it doesn’t, log into your hosting provider, turn the plugins off and log in. If you don’t know how to do this, get in touch with their support team.
Step 4: Check the Server Status
Sometimes, your host might be experiencing technical issues.
Google (or whatever your preferred search engine is!) for “[Your Hosting Company Name] server status.” Most providers have a page with a traffic light system showing if their systems are working, and if not, whether they are aware of the issue and how long it will take them to fix it.
Step 5: Call in the Cavalry
If you have tried all the above, the site is down for everyone, your bills are paid, and you haven’t touched any settings, it is time to contact support!
When you start a live chat or send an email, being specific helps them help you faster.
Don’t say: “My website is broken.”
Do say: “My website is offline. I have checked it on multiple devices and 4G, so I know it is down globally. I haven’t made any recent changes to the site. Please can you investigate?”. Screenshots are also a great help!
Your troubleshooting checklist
- Check Incognito: Is it your browser?
- Check Mobile Data: Is it your Wi-Fi?
- Check Payments: Did your domain or hosting expire?
